Read a previously generated electronic W-2 file and create a separate electronic correction file. The program presents original and corrected wage and withholding amounts for review.
Using this option
- Keep the original submission file. In W-2 Filename, select the file you are correcting. Choose a different Output Filename so the original is not overwritten.
- Check the displayed Tax Year before choosing Next. The year is supplied by the program and is not editable on this screen; contact ACS if it is not the year you need.
- For each Employee screen, compare the Original and Correct columns. Verify every corrected amount, including any prefilled value, before continuing.
- Review the Total screen against the employee corrections. Complete the process and review the finished correction file before submitting it through the appropriate service.
Fields and options
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Amounts reviewed | Wages and compensation; federal withholding; Social Security wages and tax; Medicare wages/tips and tax; Social Security tips. |
| Output Filename | The correction file to create. An existing file at this destination is replaced. |
Notes
This operation creates an export; it does not update employee payroll history or transmit the correction. Correct any underlying payroll records separately as needed.
Cancel during processing can leave an incomplete output file. Do not submit that partial file; rerun the complete correction using the retained original input.
